French DoorsA French door, also known as a French window, is a door that has glass panels extending its full length. The glass panels (also called lights, lites or panes) are built from individual pieces of glass and muillions. Muillons are simply the parts of the door that divide the glass and can be made of any material, but wood and aluminum are most commonly used. French doors come in various sizes and glass configurations such as single lite, five lite, ten light etc. or half-view, three-quarter view and full view. They can be hung as a single or double door unit. French doors are available with double pane glass too, usually for insulation purposes on exterior doors, and these may have a decorative grille between the panes. The overall choices available are great – from single pane clear tempered bevel glass to double pane clear textured architectural glass, the variety is huge. The doors can also be constructed with a range of materials e.g. wood, steel and MDF. If you choose wood, there’s also the choice of which wood you prefer e.g. cherry, mahogany, maple, fir, hemlock, oak, pine etc. This means that French doors can be designed around your own individual tastes and be carefully planned to compliment the existing décor of your house. French doors are a great addition to your home, whether they’re used to open up a previously separated room in the house or to open out into the garden. They allow natural light to flow from rooms filled with sunlight to joining rooms that were in the past dull. Their ability to transmit light is often what attracts customers to these types of doors over standard ones. The doors are available as in-swing or out-swing (in-swing opens inwards, out-swing opens outwards) and can be combined with bifold, pocket or bypass doors. |
